County to consider stricter zoning penalties

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is considering adopting state law changes that will give its strike team more leverage in enforcing overcrowding and other zoning violations. One change reduces the amount of time to appeal a violation notice to 10 days for certain types of offenses, and the other allows civil penalties totaling more than $5,000 to be prosecuted as criminal misdemeanors.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission will hold a hearing on the proposal Sept. 18 at 8:15 p.m. and the Board of Supervisors hearing is set for Oct. 20 at 4 p.m.
