County to study four-day work week
Fairfax County staff will examine the potential cost savings of instituting a four-day work week for many county employees, as other jurisdictions around the country have recently done. Advocates of such an approach say it is better for employees and the environment. The county is already making plans to deal with a projected $430 million deficit in its fiscal 2010 budget, and the Board of Supervisors voted Monday to have staff study the effect of scheduling changes on county services. Supervisor Gerry Hyland (D-Mount Vernon), who proposed the review, said he is interested in lowering energy costs and reducing pollution, but does not want to do so at the expense of customer service for constituents.
Earlier this month, Howard County, Md. officials decided to offer that county's employees the option of working four 10-hour shifts a week instead of five eight-hour shifts. With a population of about 275,000, Howard is about a quarter of the size of Fairfax.
