Piranhas lose meet, three seniors

The Pleasant Valley Piranhas (1-4) dropped a 223-179 decision to Rutherford in NVSL Division 12 action on July 19. Double-event winners for the girls included Carrie Capps, Claire Knies, Erica Schmidt, Maddie Carinci, Maddie Graham and Morgan Stakel. Double-event winners for the boys were Garrett Anderson, Joe Caron, John Krolicki, Lee Payton and Ryan Estep.

The Piranhas wish to congratulate and thank their three graduating seniors and their families.

Russell Bradley, who joined the Piranhas as a 6-year-old, will attend Northern Virginia Community College in the fall to begin his quest of becoming a veterinarian.

Tommy Meeusen, who joined the Piranhas as a 12-year-old, will attend George Mason University to study pre-physical therapy.

Nick Colantoni, who joined the team as a 4-year-old, will attend Appalachia Bible College and study youth ministry.

Westwood Whirlwinds wind up 5-0

On July 19, the Westwood Country Club Whirlwinds wrapped up a 5-0 season and clinched the Dominion Country Club league championship with a 276-239 win over Fairfax Country Club. The title was Westwood's first since 2005.

Palmer Lloyd, Tom Fenninger and Kayla O'Malley each won four events, while Victoria Tilson, Laura Kellan, Melissa Kellan and Bohe Hosking won three apiece.

Lloyd broke a league record with his time in the boys 9-10 25-meter butterfly; and the Westwood boys mixed-age 200-freestyle relay team (Matt Callahan, Fenninger, Hosking and Lloyd) broke a league record for the second time this season.

The Whirlwinds' season will conclude on Sunday when Westwood hosts the league's All-Star finals.

Wildthings drop final meet of the season

The Langley Wildthings lost their last meet of the season to the Pinecrest Piranhas in a battle that went down to the last relays and finished with only a two-point differential, 202-200.

Double-event winners for Langley included Chris Dillard, Emily Wallach, Isaac Peress, Katie Robinson, Nicole Johnson, Meghan Overend and Tracy DeMocker.

The 8-and-under girls relay team, which consisted of Wallach, Claire Mullery, Helen Horan and Ally Bulford, broke a 40-year-old record in the freestyle relay with a time of 1 minutes, 24.24 seconds.

Sequoia Farms ends season with loss 

The Sequoia Farms Stingrays fell to the Sharks in the final dual meet of the season. A new team record was set for the Stingrays by the 15-18 medley relay team of Holly Chapman, Brooke Feichtl, Kathleen Gardner and Amanda Karstetter. Kelsey Hamer, Bridget O'Malley and Chris Martin each won three individual events for Sequoia Farms, while Daniel Morris and Brian Chapman each won two. The Stingrays had five other individual winners – Lauren Chin, Blake Feichtl, Kathleen O'Malley, Jennifer Steinhilber and Russ Steinhilber – and five other relay winning teams.

Great Falls tops Springvale

In Division 14 NVSL swimming, Great Falls (4-1) finished its regular season with a 223-169 win over Springvale. Great Falls had 30 first place finishes in the meet, with the 9-10 boys and 11-12 girls winning all their events. Double event winners were Mary Liz Elliott, Will Kemmerer, Elizabeth Longosz, Ana Mulligan and Max Wingo. Single event winners included Luke Brugel, Gabriel Fowler, Evan Guidi, Jason Guidi, Jamie Keeler, Taylor Kuligowski, Jake McCarty, Rachel McGonigal, Jamie Mulligan, Eric Owens, Annie Thomas and Allie Zeidan.

Chesterbrook finishes dual meet season with victory

Chesterbrook defeated Hamlet, 267-135. Chesterbrook had nine double winners, including Jaya Kambhampaty, Claire Wolff, Veronica Wolff, Nowell Boardman, Joey Sullivan, Alston Offutt, Matthew Kuhlik, Hannah Welch and Steven Lee-Kramer. The win completed the dual meet season and put Chesterbrook in second place in Division 1 with a 4-1 record. Hamlet finished fourth at 2-3.

RSTA sees several records fall

The Reston Swim Team Association had several strong performances over the weekend. The Autumnwood Piranhas defeated the Glade Gators, 650-431, and saw Robin Brazier, Danielle Theberge, Katie Maxwell and Jillian Klarman set a team record in the Girls 15-18 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:21.28, breaking the old mark by more than four seconds.

The Hunters Woods Blue Marlins defeated the Lake Anne Stingrays, 601-515. Matthew Beach, Dylann Nasr and Melissa Le each won three events for Hunters Woods, while Bryan Marquet, Scott Mayo, Mark Rodakowski and Sophie Hartmann were all triple winners for Lake Anne.

The Lake Audubon Barracudas defeated the Lake Newport Lightning, 702-454, and John Hughes of Lake Audubon set a new RSTA Neighborhood record in the Boys 9-10 50-meter freestyle with a time of 32.66. Austin Chute, Zachary Batts, Jon Pfotenhauer and Will Sickenberger also set a new Lake Audubon team record in the Boys 15-18 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:02.46.

The North Hills Hurricanes defeated the Ridge Heights Sharks, 605-513. Christina Poirier, Keara Jones, Rachel Swarts and Kayla Kent set a new North Hills team record in the Girls 13-14 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:29.52.

Five records broken at NVSL relays 

Five NVSL records were set at the All-Star Relay Carnival on July 16. The Little Rocky Run relay team of Billy Yost, Patrick Goldammer, James Murphy and Cole McCranie broke the record in the Boys 9-10 100-meter medley relay with a time of 1:07.84. The Hunter Mill team of Jacob Freck, Eric Kim, Garrett Brown and Stephen LaRow tied the record of 1:01.68 in the Boys 11-12 100-meter medley relay. The Lee Graham team of Anna Macedonia, Maggie Macedonia, Natalie Leake and Susha Stone broke the Girls 15-18 200-meter medley relay record with a time of 2:03.97.

The Highlands Swim team of Charlie Putnam, Stephen Richards, Conor Evans and Brian Murphy broke the Boys 15-18 200-meter medley relay record with a time of 1:48.13. The Vienna Aquatic team of Lucas Hahn, Tim Daniels, Robbie Parker and John Schnittker finished second in the event, but also broke the old record with a time of 1:48.18.

In the final event of the evening, Daniels, Parker, Schnittker and David Fallavollita broke their own record in the Boys 15-18 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.18.

Local divers win titles

The Cracker Jack Invitational Dive Championship was held at Cardinal Hill in Vienna on Sunday, with 377 divers from across Northern Virginia competing. The following local divers won championships:

9-year-old – Lillie Saba (McLean)
