McLean/Great Falls loses in state final

The McLean/Great Falls 14-year-old Babe Ruth team had an easy run to the state final, outscoring its opponents 22-5 in three victories over the weekend. But the All-Stars got their first taste of defeat Monday night, 2-1, at the hands of Eastern Loudoun.

Eastern Loudoun's victory set up a winner-takes-all game Tuesday afternoon, and McLean/Great Falls saw its season come to an end with a 4-2 loss. Eastern Loudoun earned a berth into the Southeast Region tournament in Mobile, Ala., which is scheduled to begin July 31.

"You've got to give all the credit in the world to Eastern Loudoun," McLean/Great Falls coach Dave Roffman said after Tuesday's loss. "But we had a good run. Good bunch of kids."

Nate Flagg threw a complete game for McLean/Great Falls Monday, but was tagged with the loss after Eastern Loudoun scored twice without hitting a ball out of the infield. An infield single pushed across the tying run for Eastern Loudoun and the winning run scored in the fifth inning on an interference call at third base.

Brock Hunter took the mound in Tuesday's finale, tossing his third complete game of the tournament. Though he took the loss, Hunter was named the Most Valuable Player of the state tournament for his success on the mound and at the plate. In addition to his pitching prowess, Hunter hit .437 in the team's five games.

"He's just a tremendous kid, tremendous pitcher," Roffman said of Hunter. "Deserved to win today, I thought. He's going to have a good career at Langley. He's going to be a horse."
