Past PTA president sentenced for embezzlement
Triantafilitsa Mattfeld, former president of the Navy Elementary Parent Teacher Association, will serve a year in jail after being sentenced July 18.Mattfeld, treasurer and president of the PTA from 2001 to 2006, was charged with two counts of embezzlement Aug. 22, 2007, after she allegedly took $180,000 from the PTA's funds.
Final restitution to the organization, now called the Parent Teacher Organization, was much less than that amount because it was difficult to assess how much had been embezzled, said Ian Rodway, chief deputy for the Fairfax Commonwealth's Attorney's office.
“The thing with organizations like PTAs is that it's organized so it's hard to track down how the money is being spent,” Rodway said. “They just trust the people who are spending the money.”
Mattfeld was sentenced to five years in jail, but four of those years were suspended.
Pending approval by the county's sheriff, much of the jail time will be served at home because of Mattfeld's health problems, Rodway said.
