McLean 9- and 10-year-old softball wins fourth state title:

The McLean Little League Softball All-Stars won their fourth state title in the past six years with an undefeated romp through a four-game tournament last week in Richmond, which was capped off by an 11-3 win over Honaker in state final.

The 9- and 10-year-old girls hit .437 as a team and scored 57 runs on 55 hits throughout those four games – an average of 14.25 runs per game.

Team members included Carina Sturm, Sami Youaw, Mia Gentry, Eleanor Chinn, Ariana Bowers, Rachel Andrejev, Erin Calpin, Allie Clark, Lucy Mulligan, Olivia Giaquinto, Tessa Smalley and Olivia Bravo. The team was led by coach Antonio Bravo and manager Joe Gianquinto.

McLean Cobras reach tournament final:

The McLean Cobras were finalists in the MidAtlantic States Championship of Baseball Players of America in Bowie, Md., a tournament held July 19-20. The Cobras are an independent U-14 travel team, and their next tournament will be the AAU National Championships in Orlando, Fla.

Team members include Nick Baker, Ben Blumenthal, Jack Conroy, Mark D'Ermes, Joe Kotapish, Coleman Luwis, Robby Maffei, Dominick Manuel, Patrick Morris, Kyle McCauley, Matt McDonald, Hunter Oke, Spencer Shabshab, Will Shanahan, Joe Shirey, Quincy Smith, Bryan White and Brian Maffei. The Cobras are led by head coach Jimmy Strayhorne and assistant coach Shane Mills.

Tuckahoe has strong showing at Division 2 championships:

At the NVSL Division 2 championships last Saturday, the Tuckahoe Tigers led all teams with 14 victories. Megan Howard, Claire Greene and Eva Greene all won two events, while Eva Greene's 30.59-second performance in the backstroke set a new NVSL record.

Also scoring victories for Tuckahoe were Austin Auger, Brendan Whipkey, Karen Schirm, Bethany Rysak, Carter Flint, Evie Gieseman, Michael May and Benjamin Mennitt.

RiverBend roundup:

At their final regular season meet, the RiverBend StingRays defeated Hidden Creek, 395-114. RiverBend took home 36 individual first-place ribbons with several StingRays winning multiple events. Michael Killmon and Olivia Justus each won four events. Carter Bennett, Andrew Kvasnicka and Max Trautwein won three.

In the Dominion Country Club League All-Star Meet, the RiverBend swimmers claimed 40 medals. Meet star Jessica Hawken broke two 15-18 girls records in the freestyle and fly. Other first place finishers included Ryan Windus, Max Trautwein, Erin Fredrick and Carter Bennett.

RiverBend swam to two more league records at the Relay Carnival. The StingRays' 15-18 girls relay lowered the mark in the 200-meter freestyle relay, as well as the 200 medley relay with times of 1 minutes, 58.70 seconds and 2:11.08, respectively.

Wildthings topple 3 records at Division 5 championships:

Three Langley Wildthings broke swimming records at NVSL's Division 5 championships over the weekend. Nathan Johnson broke the 9-10 backstroke record with a time of 37.06 seconds, Nicole Johnson broke the 13-14 breaststroke record (36.75), and Jamie Sexton broke the 15-18 breaststroke record with a time of 31.76.

Other division champions for Langley were Isaac Peress, Jacqueline Litschewski and Katie Robinson.

Great Falls Rapids dominant in Division 14 action:

The Great Falls Rapids captured 29 medals (13 gold, eight silver, eight bronze) at the NVSL's Division 14 championships last Saturday. James Cutler, Mary Liz Elliot, Jason Guidi, Kendall Heebink, Will Kemmerer, Elizabeth Longosz, Ana Mulligan, Max Wingo and Ana Mulligan all captured two medals each.

Single-medal winners for Great Falls included Evan Guidi, Jamie Keeler, Annie Kemmerer, Kevin Kennedy, Ty Kovacs, Eric Owens, Karyle Pallotta, Annie Thomas, Stephen Thorsen and Allie Ziedan.

17 records fall at RSTA All-Star meet:

Katherine DeCrosta, Jonathan Christensen, Mark Rodakowski and Rachel Swarts set two individual records each during the Reston Swim Team Association's All-Star meet over the weekend, while five relay marks and several other individual records fell as well.

DeCrosta set new marks in the girls 15-18 backstroke and freestyle, and Christensen made history in the boys 15-18 butterfly and breaststroke. Other single-record setters in the boys 15-18 division included John Baldwin (freestyle), Christopher Clark (backstroke) and Michael Ziaii (freestyle).

Ziaii and Rodakowski teamed with Christopher Hall-Tipping and Nicholas Adagio to break a record in one medley relay, while Clark, Will Chantry, Will Fehringer and Will Cormier set yet another medley relay mark.

Swarts set her freestyle and backstroke marks in the girls 13-14 division and later teamed with Christina Poirier, Keara Jones and Kayla Kent to break a record in the medley relay. In the girls 11-12 division, Callie Chute, Sabrina Groves, Sasha Avilov and Madeleine Daum set a mark in the medley relay.

In the boys 9-10 division, John Hughes set a mark in the backstroke, and in the girls 6-18 division, Claudia Ruder, Kathryn Paiewonsky, Tope Oladimeji, Suzanne Ziaii and Kat McKinstry set a mark in the mixed-age relay.

Tryouts and announcements:

Fall 2008 registration for McLean Youth Soccer is open at www.mcleansoccer.org for all returning and new families. MYS offers various programs for children ages 4-18. Register no later than July 31 to take advantage of the discounted registration fees. The season begins Sept. 8 and extends through mid-November. Practice begins Aug. 4 for Reston Youth Association (RYA) football. Practice will run Monday through Friday, 6-8 p.m., at Langston Hughes Middle School. Reston-area youth ages 7-16 as of Oct. 1 are welcome to sign up, and players can register at Langston Hughes before practice. Games will be played on the new turf fields at Lake Fairfax Park.
