Stabbing at the Vienna Inn

A longtime employee of the Vienna Inn was stabbed while working late at the local landmark bar and restaurant in the early morning hours of July 26. The victim, Alberto Villatoro, remains in Inova Fairfax Hospital.

"He's a strong man, he's going to be OK," said Bryan Volk, manager of the Vienna Inn. "This is the most terrible thing that's happened here while I've been around."

Villatoro generally works late as a dishwasher and cleans up after the restaurant has closed. According to police, the night of the attack, somebody else was in the building with Villatoro and severely injured the restaurant employee with a knife.

"We don't know if he snuck in or broke in or what," Volk said.

At about 2:45 a.m., Villatoro called 911 himself. Responding Vienna Police officers had to administer first aid to Villatoro to control his bleeding until paramedics arrived on the scene.

"We had a lot of trouble getting information from the victim at first because of his wounds," Officer William Murray said.

Nevertheless, that evening the Vienna police arrested Vienna resident Jaime Espinal, 21, and charged him with aggravated malicious wounding. According to police, Espinal and Villatoro know each other, and testimony from numerous witnesses led the police to arrest Espinal at his home.

The Vienna Inn was closed Saturday for cleanup after the incident but has since reopened. Meanwhile, Villatoro remains hospitalized.

"We have people coming in and asking about him all the time. ... We really support him," Volk said.
