6 Year Old Collects Donations
By CWhitt
A local area Reston resident decided to collect donations in lieu of birthday presents for himself. Kyle Whitt turned 6 on Sunday, August 17, 2008 and celebrated his birthday with 14 friends at a carnival themed party at home complete with a giant slide, bouncer and various carnival games and prizes. The kids were also treated to sno-cones, popcorn, various snacks, pizza and of course birthday cake and ice cream. What was different for this celebration however was Kyle had requested his guests to bring donations for local area first graders who are not are fortunate as he is. He wanted to provide classroom and school supplies for them so that they might enjoy their school year as much as he does. Kyle was amazed when browsing a website with his mom that certain schools didn't have enough crayons or even scissors in their classrooms. He searched through local area teachers' wish lists at www.iloveschools.com and was determined to help out!
With the help of the generous donations from his guests, Kyle collected 44 spiral notebooks, 289 pencils, 19 boxes of crayons, 5 boxes of colored pencils, 104 glue sticks, 7 boxes of markers, 6 pencil boxes and various amounts of construction paper, lined paper, book covers, pencil erasers and sharpeners, folders, chalk, scissors, science and learning books, puzzles and games, calculators, rulers, play doh and even a new backpack. Kyle even plans on going shopping with his mom to purchase additional books for the classroom since he is an avid reader and loves books. His parents Jack and Cheryl Whitt are very proud of his efforts. They are happy to know their child is willing to do this at such a young age and hope it continues throughout his life and that it will serve as an inspiration for other children to be so kind too.
